Guided tour of Arcos de la Frontera
Where
you are standing now
| You are now half way up the tower of St. Mary's church and looking down at the castle. It dates back to the 11th century and was built by the Moors. They used it as a military fortress. Rebuilding work went on in the 14th and 15th centuries under the Christians, a time when the Dukes of Arcos de la Frontera used to live in the castle. Legend has it that the ghost of a Moorish woman wanders along the castle embattlements each moonlit night, in search of her lover. These days public access is limited to just the odd day in the year; it is in private hands and the present owners live outside Arcos de la Frontera. But you can go up the steps under the arch of the Town Hall (the white building you can see under the castle) to have a look at the castle's beautiful main entrance door. Now let's go back down and walk behind the church. |
