Víctor
Marín
All but one of the black and white photographs
in the series were taken by Víctor Marín Solano, pictured
left. Born in Navarra in 1911, as a child he moved to Jerez de la
Frontera
and later studied Medicine at Granada University. In 1939 he began a career
spanning 45 years as a Pharmacist in Arcos de la Frontera. Throughout
his life his great hobby was photography and we are fortunate that his
original portraits of Arcos de la Frontera have survived until the present
day.
Since
his death in the early 1990s the collection of photographs has been kept
by the Fundación 'Víctor Marín' here in Arcos de
la Frontera, and we are very grateful to the Fundación for granting
us permission to exhibit a selection of the photographs here. Each year
there is a competition run by the Fundación which invites the public
to submit their photographs of Arcos de la Frontera. There's a cash prize
for the winner!
We have taken our own photographs of many of the same streets and views
so you can compare how they look now with how they looked in Marín's
day. Just move your mouse over the images where the option is there.
The last black and white photo in the series was taken by R. Hernández
in 1867. One of the earliest surviving images of Arcos de la Frontera,
it shows the inauguration day of the Puente de Piedra (Stone Bridge) which
nowadays is the Puente de Hierro (Iron Bridge). All the other photographs
were taken by Marín in the 1940s and 1950s.
