| The Matrera Gate (a name it was given in the eighteenth century) was formerly one of only two ways in and out of Arcos de la Frontera. It was once defended by four towers, one of which survives today. The Gate was built by the Moors and legend has it that they opened it one night for their colleagues visiting from Ronda, only to be surprised by the Christians, who went on to defeat them in a three-day battle. The Jerez Gate, also known as the Belén Gate, lay at the other end of the Old Quarter until it was dismantled in 1852. Hover your mouse over the scene to see how it looks today! |
